Judas Priest are an English heavy metal band formed in Birmingham, England in 1969.Known for twin lead guitars, a wide operatic vocal style, and for introducing the S&M leather-and-studs look into heavy metal, they have sold over 50 million albums worldwide. The band is widely recognised as one of the finest and most original heavy metal bands of all time, with many artists within the genre having cited them as a major influence.MTV ranked them the second "Greatest Metal Band" of all time.Despite an innovative and pioneering body of work in the late 1970s, the band struggled with indifferently-produced records, repeated changes at the drummer position, and a lack of major commercial success or attention until 1980 when they adopted a more simplified sound on the album British Steel, which helped shoot them to rock superstar status. In 1989, they were named as defendants in an unsuccessful lawsuit alleging that subliminal messages on their albums had caused the suicide attempts of two young men.The band's membership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast of drummers in the 1970s, and the temporary departure of singer Rob Halford in the early 1990s. The current line-up consists of lead vocalist Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is 1982's Screaming for Vengeance featuring their most commercially successful line-up, featuring Halford, Tipton, Hill, K. K. Downing (guitar), and Dave Holland (drums). They were a major influence on multiple genres of metal, including but not limited to power metal and thrash metal.Their influence, while mainly Rob Halford's operatic vocal style (widely considered as one of the most unique vocalists in the genre) and the twin guitar sound of K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton, has been adopted by many bands. Their image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing were widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s.Their 1980 album, British Steel, has been referred to as the "record that, more than any other, codified what we mean by "heavy metal".Despite a decline in exposure during the mid 1990s, the band has once again seen a resurgence, including worldwide tours, being inaugural inductees into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2005, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and their songs featured in video games such as Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series.Redeemer of Souls is the upcoming seventeenth studio album by heavy metal band Judas Priest, set to be released on 14 July 2014. It is their first album in 6 years (their previous album being 2008's Nostradamus) and also their first without founding guitarist K.K. Downing, who left the band in 2011 and was replaced by new guitarist Richie Faulkner. On 27 January 2011, it was announced that Judas Priest was in the process of writing new material for what was thought to be the group's final album due to their previously announced farewell tour entitled the Epitaph World Tour, but the band clarified that the Epitaph tour was "by no means the end of the band".Speaking at a press conference in Los Angeles on May, 26, of the new material Glenn Tipton said: "It's quite a mixed bag. Really, there's more sentiment on this album. In a way, I suppose, it's also our farewell album, although it might not be our last one. There are some anthems on there, which pay tribute to our fans"Guitarist Glenn Tipton said that fans should not expect wild experimentation. "Sometimes in the past we may have come under fire for being too adventurous musically – so we have listened," he said. "From start to finish, 'Redeemer of Souls' is 18 songs of pure classic PRIEST metal."When asked why the bonus tracks are only included in the deluxe edition of the album and not in the standard release, Tipton explains:"They are all great songs," he says. "The reason they are not on the album is because the 13 that we chose are very consistent with what we wanted to do, which was release an undisputable heavy metal album. The others, they are not lightweight by any chance, but they've got a different feel, a different texture."So it's not a case of trying to rip the kids off and trying to get more money for an extra album, it's just a case of, these five tracks seem to deserve to go on their own CD, and that's what we did."

Album:

British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST kicked off their "Redeemer Of Souls" tour last night (Wednesday, October 1) at the Main Street Armory in Rochester, New York.Asked if there was a negative vibe swirling around the band during the "Epitaph" tour, JUDAS PRIEST guitarist Glenn Tipton told Guitar World magazine: "I don't know if it was a negative vibe around us as much as it was a little bit unsure of what the future held for JUDAS PRIEST. For me, the 'Epitaph' tour was one of the most satisfying and gratifying tours we had ever done. It was a grueling task to go out and play for two and a half hours every night, but to play a song off every album brought out a lot of sentimental feelings, and I think we all rose to the occasion. But there was a little bit of uncertainty around the band — what we were going to do next, that kind of thing. And it wasn't until we started writing the album and really getting into the meat and potatoes of it that we realized, Hold on, this is going to be more than just another album — there's something special going on here. And that starts to breed enthusiasm. You look forward to the future. You look forward to playing these songs onstage. So I think the band has evolved since the 'Epitaph' era into a different way of thinking. We've never been more content, and we're excited about the future."Added PRIEST singer Rob Halford: "In light of the 'Epitaph' experience, if and when the final note is played, we certainly won't be announcing it. I think it's just going to happen one day, and that's probably the nicest way to do it. You take very small steps back until you're done, and I think it'll be that way for us. But the fact that PRIEST's music will live forever, the way Beethoven and Bach's music lives forever, that really is the most incredible accomplishment that you can dwell on and feel proud of."Regarding whether it was disappointing to join a legendary band like JUDAS PRIEST and suddenly have people speculating about the group's demise, guitarist Richie Faulkner said: "When I came onboard and was welcomed into the family, I was very aware of where the band were in their career. Not that I wasn't already aware of it, since I'm a fan of the band, but it certainly wasn't something I was going to pass up just because there's a chance that the band was coming to the end of its career. And maybe if there was any sense within the band of winding down, maybe I'm the one who's keeping them going. And some people out there might not like me for that, but what was I going to do? Not join the band? Sometimes you just have to take the bull by the horns. And as a result, here we are with 18 new studio tracks and a new JUDAS PRIEST album."
